Chapter Thirteen

Serina stared into her crystal ball and chuckled, but suddenly the chuckling stopped and she banged the crystal. “They’ve gone,” she muttered. “The humans have gone. She looked closely at the crystal, so closely in fact that she bumped her nose on it. “No matter I’ve seen where they are. We can find them.”

Then she looked up in triumph. “I know how to get them into my power.” She let out a squawking cackle that would have made a cockatoo’s song sound beautiful. “I have a wonderfully evil, foolproof plan.”

On the beach in the cove everyone had settled down to rest except for Regina who was supposed to be on guard. But even she was lying down with her eyes gently closed when the four trolls crept onto the beach. Serina had given them strict instructions on what to do and how to get to the now not-so-secret cove.

They went silently about their work, which was quite peculiar. They put new leaves onto the spearmint tree and added a bright red fruit to the breadfruit tree.

Bumpy, being his usual silly self, ran into Tumpy, who gave a loud gasp, and that was enough to waken Regina. She opened her eyes and saw the trolls which had finished their task and begun punching each other and giggling.

Regina closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep until the trolls, still giggling, ran away into the bush, then jumped to her feet to follow them but suddenly she stopped.

“That’s just what they want me to do I’ll bet,” she muttered. “I’ll stay here, stay awake, and protect everyone until it’s time to go.”

Even the best intentions however, sometimes don’t work out.

She did stay awake for a long time, but eventually she drifted into a deep sleep. She was still asleep when Kellie woke up.

Kellie stretched and yawned and her rumbling tummy told her she was peckish. She nudged Gregory awake. “I’m hungry,” she said.

Gregory sat up and rubbed his tummy. “You’re not the only one.” He scrambled to his feet. “I think I fancy something from the breadfruit tree,” he said.

He moved quickly to the tree, and Kellie followed him. He stopped and looked at the trees. The blue fruit was still there of course, but it was a bright red one that caught his eye.

“Look at that,” he said.

“That wasn’t there before we fell asleep,” said Kellie.

“Maybe it ripened,” said Gregory.

“What has?” David had woken up.

“I’m trying to decide what to have for breakfast,” said Gregory. “And I like the look of that red fruit.”

But Kellie was worried. Something didn’t quite add up. “Wasn’t the apple that poisoned Snow White bright red?” she asked.

“Yes,” said Gregory, “but that was poisoned before she got it. This is still growing on the tree.”

Kellie was still doubtful.

“Take the thing if you’re going to,” said David. “You humans always want to discuss things to an alarming extent. Just take it.”

So Gregory did. He opened the peel, which was just like unwrapping a parcel, and looked inside.
